The World Awaits

The Prophet Isaiah, Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

By far, my favorite. Good choice :)

That is my all-time favorite hymn. Why am I not surprised? BTW... I have a baked good on my blog today that I think you and your brood might enjoy - it would be good Christmas baking, too.

There is something in the singing of those words that brings me to tears. So somber and yet so joyful.

This is also my favorite Christmas hymn (though not my fave all time hymn--I just felt I had to clarify that--heaven forbid anyone should have an incorrect thought about me--see what a control freak I am?)

I love the yearning in this. I hope I can develop a similar yearning for the second coming (rather than fear and avoidance.) :)

Beautiful. If winter's weren't so cold and gray, I do believe I could love Advent with more vigor.

I wish I had the talent to find the beauty that you do. I get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life during the season sometimes that I forget to take a minute and soak in the beauty of the season. Thanks Luisa for doing this for those of us that need the extra nudge. Thanks for sharing your talents.

I can read the Hebrew on Isaiah's scroll, and it's interesting that it is a quote from Isaiah 26:2, "Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in."
